Oglethorpe Police Department Receives Award for Excellence from the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police

SAVANNAH — Chief Rachael Lee Hart and her department, Oglethorpe Police Department, have been named the recipient of the 2020 Dr. Curtis E. McClung/Motorola Award for Excellence by the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police. (GACP)  This award, co-sponsored by the Motorola Corporation, is given annually to an agency in recognition of an innovative program initiated by the department that fosters law enforcement excellence.  Chief Hart and representatives from the department received the award on Tuesday evening, July 21st, 2020.

Chief Hart and the Oglethorpe Police Department, in conjunction with Cops In Community Programs, established Georgia’s first Community Policing Resource Center designed to provide small, rural agencies with support in implementing community policing programs and outreach

This Center focuses on three facets of outreach within the community.  The first is the Chiefs’ Diploma Program, that assists community members in obtaining their High School diplomas. Currently, 9 SW GA police departments participate in this program with many success stories and a reduction in crime rates.  The second is the Backpack with a Cop where officers deliver backpacks that are fully stocked with supplies into communities in need.  The third is Christmas with a Cop, where members of the community come out and wrap presents for kids.  In 2019, they wrapped 4,800 presents.  Oglethorpe P.D. will receive a $1,000.00 award for their achievement.

There were two runner-ups to this award both with outstanding community relations programs – the LaGrange Police Department and Marietta Police Department.  Both runner-ups received $500 to foster the growth of those very professional community relations programs.

This prestigious award is named after Dr. Curtis McClung of Columbus, who is credited with bringing Georgia’s law enforcement community into the modern era while also assisting the GACP in its pursuit of excellence, especially with respect to management training.
