One of GACP President Joseph Wirthman’s goals this year has been to develop and offer a P.O.S.T. approved training class that can be delivered through an online training webinar.  The GACP is proud to announce that this goal will be achieved with an upcoming 1-hour training class (executive credit) scheduled for December 6, 2018, at 2pm.

Almost every agency across Georgia and throughout the United States uses social media and rightly so.  Social media is a powerful community engagement tool, provides opportunities to educate our citizens and even allows agencies to bypass the media filter and talk about the great work of our officers each day.

Of course, social media has its pitfalls if not managed carefully.  One of those pitfalls is how to manage public comments, particular on Facebook, while respecting First Amendment considerations.  In addition, a quick Google search will provide dozens or even hundreds of examples where officers have been disciplined, even fired, over comments made on their personal social media platforms.  What is the right balance between First Amendment considerations and the efficient operation of the organization?

This one hour webinar, First Amendment Considerations for Law Enforcement Using Social Media, will address both of these concerns.    Attendees will be provided with current case law, review best practices and in the end, will be equipped to manage first amendment considerations for citizens on the police department social media sites as well as employees using their personal social media accounts.
