Chief of Police

Town of Siler City                                                       

 

Background:  The Town of Siler City seeks an experienced, innovative and energetic law enforcement executive to replace its retiring Chief.  Siler City is a growing, diverse and dynamic community of 8,444 in close proximity to the Triad and Research Triangle area with arts, amenities, and high-quality education at all levels while maintaining small town ambiance.  The Town has a Police Department with 21 sworn and 6 civilian positions and a budget of $1.8 million.  The position will function as a member of the Town’s management team reporting to the Town Manager in a Council-Manager form of government.  Successful candidates will participate in an assessment center as part of the final selection process.  The Assessment Center is tentatively scheduled for January 10 and 11, 2019.

 

Responsibilities:  The Chief is responsible for developing and enhancing a department encompassing all aspects of municipal law enforcement including patrol, investigations, telecommunications, crime prevention, and community engagement. Management functions include dynamic leadership, long range and strategic planning, complex problem-solving and decision making, staffing, mentoring, training, succession planning, budgeting, technology and other resource management.  A major job focus is leadership regarding quality engagement with the diverse community.  This position represents the opportunity to make a significant impact on the department and the community.

 

Requirements:  Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a major in law enforcement, criminal justice, public administration, business or related field and considerable experience of a progressively responsible nature in law enforcement management; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Advanced Law Enforcement Certification, advanced training through the Southern Police Institute, FBI, NCSU AOMP or other similar program is strongly preferred. The Town seeks a visionary with a strong track record in community engagement and related programming, problem-solving and partnership; staff development; and a high level of professional ethics and integrity. Working in collaboration with Town management and other Town departments in this Council-Manager form of government is also essential, as well as strong law enforcement technical skills, leadership and management skills.  The Town prefers candidates who have a background in both patrol and investigations work.  The successful candidate will be expected to move to Siler City and live within the ETJ and/or town limits within one year of hire.

 

Compensation:  Hiring salary range is $76,972 - $100,000 depending on qualifications. The Town has a competitive benefits package.
