POSITION TITLE: Police Captain

  SALARY: $70,000 yearly

  LOCATION: MCSD Police Department

Primary Function: The position of Police Captain is created to assist the Chief of Police in the day-to-day operations of the school police department through the direct supervision of school resource officers, civilian employees and other staff as assigned for the purpose of providing a safe learning environment for students, staff and parents, preservation of life, public order, and investigation of criminal acts which occur on property of the Muscogee County School District.



Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred

Certification/License Required:

Certified as a Georgia Peace Officer pursuant to qualifications established by Georgia Law, Title 35-8, the Rules of the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council. Must be capable of qualifying with a firearm on the existing firearms qualification course(s). Maintain a Georgia Driver’s License


Minimum of ten (10) years of law enforcement experience with at least three (3) years in a managerial role, or any combination of education, experience and training to perform the essential functions and duties of the position.

Essential Functions

  • Assist the Chief of Police in the development, implementation and annual review of general orders, procedures and directives to comply with applicable Federal, State and Local law. Must be willing to work rotating shifts, variable hours and be on call as necessary
  • Knowledge of law enforcement management and supervisory practices and principles
  • Assist with the performance of personnel administrative duties, (e.g. interviewing applicants, conducting background investigations, making recommendations to hire and terminate personnel, supervising, scheduling, counseling and coaching, training, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining adequate staffing, enhancing productivity of personnel and achieving the overall objectives of the department within budgetary constraints
  • Respond to emergency situations for the purpose of addressing immediate safety concerns and collaborates with other agencies to aid in the effective communication of information regarding information for situations which may affect safety within the schools
  • Coordinate activities at the scene of an investigation with school district personnel and other agencies for the purpose of effective communication and coordination of resources
  • Communicate with school district divisions and other outside agencies (e.g. District Attorney’s Office, Solicitor General’s Office, Department of Juvenile Justice, Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS), etc.) for the purpose of effective communication and resource coordination
  • Coordinate School Police Department services with other law enforcement agencies, prosecutor’s offices and courts
  • Analyze information from a variety of sources to identify trends in suspicious and/or criminal activity and make recommendations to the Chief of Police regarding assignment of personnel for the purpose of assuring the safety of students, staff and other community stakeholders
  • Communicate with the Chief of Police and district administration regarding the status of on-going student or property investigations for the purpose of effective communication of resources
  • Perform line inspections or personnel regarding uniforms, equipment, and assigned patrol units for appearance, cleanliness, maintenance for the purpose of compliance with departmental general orders, policy, rules and regulations
  • Collaborate with the department’s Terminal Agency Coordinator (TAC) for the purpose of ensuring compliance with all NCIC/GCIC rules and regulations pertaining to the CJIS Network
  • Serve as a member of the Emergency Response Team and work with the Director of Risk Management for the purpose of enhancing the safety and security of students, staff, other stakeholders and district property
  • Make routine patrols of assigned facilities to include buildings, parking lots, equipment, and prepare reports as required for the purpose of enhancing the safety and security of students, staff and other stakeholder’s and district property
  • Attend departmental meetings, job related training and other in-service training
  • Attend Court and/or other administrative hearings to provide testimony in the proceedings when required
  • Serve as acting Chief of Police in the absence of the Chief of Police to ensure continuity of services for the District Police Department
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the effective and efficient operation of the unit
