Summary: Under general supervision, this position is responsible for first-line supervision and training of personnel assigned to a division of the Police Department. Work involves directing and overseeing assigned personnel, coordinating daily operations, ensuring compliance with departmental policies and procedures, supervising major incidents and investigations, and supporting law enforcement operations. Duties include personnel supervision, training, scheduling, performance management, incident command, community engagement, and related administrative and law enforcement activities.
Essential Job Functions: Supervises and directs the daily activities of assigned personnel and coordinates shift operations with other units, departments, and outside agencies. Assumes the duties and responsibilities of the Lieutenant or Captain in their absence and keeps command staff informed of significant incidents, activities, and operational concerns.
Oversees major incidents, investigations, arrests, and emergency situations; serves as Incident Commander when necessary. Ensures departmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures are followed and takes appropriate corrective or disciplinary action when needed. Schedules and assigns personnel to maximize operational effectiveness; reviews employee performance; identifies training needs and recommends specialized training opportunities. Reviews, approves, and evaluates reports, warrants, investigations, and other documentation for accuracy and completeness. Maintains administrative records, including attendance records, duty rosters, leave requests, and timekeeping documentation. Conducts roll call briefings and ensures the communication of important information between shifts. Responds to citizen complaints and law enforcement-related inquiries; mediates disputes and assists with problem resolution. Maintains positive relationships with the community through public outreach, education, and public relations activities.
Monitors officer readiness and ensures assigned personnel maintain departmental standards regarding uniforms, equipment, vehicles, and fitness for duty. Participates in departmental meetings, training programs, conferences, and community events.
Assists with general law enforcement functions, including responding to calls for service, supporting patrol operations, making arrests, issuing citations, and providing emergency response services as needed. Testifies in court and presents evidence as required.
Operates departmental vehicles and equipment safely and efficiently. Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education, Training and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Criminology, Criminal Justice, or a related field preferred. Five (5) to seven (7) years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience required. Prior supervisory experience preferred; external applicants must possess a minimum of two (2) years of supervisory experience. Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
Required Certificates/Licenses: Certification as a Peace Officer through the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (P.O.S.T.) is required. Valid State of Georgia Driver’s License required. Must successfully pass a pre-employment physical abilities test, medical examination, drug screening, background investigation, and maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record (MVR).
