I'm Done Here: Creating Lasting Impact By Leading with Integrity
Spring | 2025
I first met Jason Armstrong when he was a Captain with the Forest Park Police Department. He contacted me to discuss options as he explored opportunities to advance his career and become a police chief. Jason eventually reached his goal and served as the police chief of Ferguson, MO (yes, The Ferguson) and Apex, NC, before retiring earlier this year.
Now, on to my review.
Jason P. Armstrong’s I’m Done Here is a compelling and thought-provoking read that challenges law enforcement leaders to rethink their leadership approach and legacy. Armstrong, an experienced law enforcement professional, delivers a powerful message: leadership is not just about results but about the intentionality behind your actions and the lasting impact you leave on those you lead. For law enforcement leaders navigating the complexities of modern policing, this book is both timely and essential.
A Framework for Intentional Leadership
Armstrong’s premise is simple yet profound: leaders must adopt a deliberate and purposeful approach to their roles if they wish to inspire trust, develop their teams, and create meaningful change. The book is structured around the idea of “intentionality” as the driving force of impactful leadership. This concept is especially relevant in law enforcement, where decisions often carry significant consequences for officers, the organization, and the community.
One of the book’s strengths is Armstrong’s ability to weave personal anecdotes, practical advice, and leadership principles into a coherent narrative. His stories from the field resonate deeply with law enforcement personnel, highlighting real-life challenges such as morale, accountability, and the pressure to perform under scrutiny. Each chapter builds on the last, offering actionable insights that can be applied immediately.
Core Themes for Law Enforcement Leaders
The book explores several themes that are particularly relevant for law enforcement leadership today:
- Self-Awareness: Armstrong emphasizes the importance of leaders understanding their values, biases, and motivations. For police chiefs and command staff, this self-awareness is critical when making decisions that impact public trust and organizational culture.
- Building Relationships: Armstrong’s discussion of relational leadership is a standout feature. He argues that leaders who genuinely care about their teams and invest in their personal and professional growth foster loyalty and high performance. For law enforcement leaders, this principle can translate into stronger, more cohesive teams.
- Adaptability: In an era of rapid change and public scrutiny, Armstrong encourages leaders to embrace adaptability while remaining rooted in their core values. His strategies for navigating change are realistic and easily adapted to any department.
- Legacy: The book’s title reflects Armstrong’s challenge to leaders: consider what your departure from an organization will signify. Will it reflect growth, trust, progress, or division and stagnation? For police chiefs and command staff, this question is a powerful reminder of the importance of leaving a positive imprint.
Relevance to Law Enforcement Leadership
Jason’s insights are particularly valuable for law enforcement leaders striving to balance operational demands with the need for community engagement and officer development. His emphasis on intentionality aligns closely with the principles of procedural justice and community-oriented policing. The book’s practical advice on mentorship, communication, and decision-making directly applies to law enforcement’s unique leadership challenges.
Conclusion
I’m Done Here is more than a book about leadership; it’s a call to action for law enforcement leaders to lead with purpose and leave a lasting, positive legacy. Jason provides a roadmap for leaders to evaluate their impact and align their actions with their values. For law enforcement professionals seeking to elevate their leadership approach, this book is an indispensable resource. It inspires and equips leaders with the tools needed to create a meaningful and enduring influence in their organizations and communities.
